Use Tax Defeated By City, County Voters

By: Lauren Rauth
Updated: November 7, 2012
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Use Tax was defeated by voters Tuesday night in both St. Joseph and Buchanan County.

It failed with 59 percent of the no vote in the city, and a 59 percent no vote in the county.

The Use Tax allows both the city and county to tax major purchases made outside the state.

If passed, it would apply to items worth more than $2,000.

City and county officials say without it they would lose out on a lot of money.

Voters have defeated a use tax three times before in the past.
