Health officials say 43 people have died in Indiana this season from flu-related illnesses. That's a big jump compared to last season.

Although the flu vaccine may not be 100-percent effective, health officials say it's still a whole lot better than nothing.

"You need a vaccination every year. There are different strains that circulate from year to year" says Allen County Health Department spokesperson John Silcox.

Flu season may be winding down, but it's not over yet, which is why health officials are urging folks to get the flu vaccine. But just how effective is it? Health officials say this year's vaccine is about 62-percent effective, so even if you got the vaccine, you may still get the flu.

"The flu vaccination is not 100-percent effective for anyone" says Silcox.

But, Silcox say 62-percent effective is still better than nothing.

"It's still the best tool we have and it's still the best way to reduce your risk. It will also make the flu that you might get less severe than it normally would be" he says.

And even if you've never gotten the flu before that doesn't mean you won't get it this time around.

"We can kind of learn from this flu season and hopefully people will be a little bit better protected this time around" Silcox says.
