The economy, jobs and a return to bipartisanship were high on the list of topics in President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday night.

"We are not rivals of power, but partners of progress," said the President in his opening remarks. The nearly hour-long speech urged Congress to come to a consensus on the budget and gun control."

In the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the President took the opportunity to urge Congress to continue to work together on reforms.

"it has been two months since Newtown," he said. "I know this is not the first time this country has debated how to reduce gun violence but hit sis different. Overwhelming majorities of americans have come together for common-sense reforms like background checks, Senators working together on tough new laws to prevent criminals from buying guns."

The President also touched on improving economic conditions, and trying to foster the return of the manufacturing sector.

A gallop poll released Tuesday before the President's speech shows the President is lagging in public opinion when it comes jobs. Just 36 percent of Americans said they approved how President Obama is handling the economy.
