The Fort Wayne SORT team is trained in these high angle rescues-Unfortunately this wasn't a rescue it was a recovery, said Stacey Fleming, Fort Wayne Fire Department Public Information Officer.

The crash happened just after 7 this morning at of Landin-About 25 feet above the Maumee River.  It was this steep incline that prompted the New Haven Adams Township Fire Department's call for help.

"Fort Wayne does a very good job at that type of interoperability and team work is what we're all about," said Ed Lytal of the New Haven Fire Department

It was reported by Norfolk Southern that the crossing gate was working and the alarm on the gate sounded properly. While investigators continue to search for answers one New Haven man doesn't think this was an accident.

"He was sitting in between the crossing guard and the track and anyways when he seen the train coming he drove up on the track the train hit him and shoved him down the  bridge," said Ned Byer, a New Haven resident.

When approaching railroad Crossings, Officials say that it is vital to be alert.

"You so on a daily basis see railroad cross signs down, lights blaring and everyone's busy and trying to get some place fast if the bars are down and lights are flashing there's a reason, said Fleming.

"WHEN THE GATES are down stop don't go around them the train will always win even if the train was going slow a 7,000 foot train is not going to stop in 30 feet," said Lytal.

The speed of the train when it hit the car has not been determined but the speed limit for this particular crossing is 60 MPH.
