Postal Service to End Saturday Mail Service Aug. 1st

Fort Wayne, Ind. (WFFT) - The U.S. Postal Service plans to stop delivering letters and other first-class mail on Saturdays beginning August 1st, although packages will continue to be delivered.

After waiting for help from congress, the Postal Service is expected to unveil a series of more drastic cuts to save billions of dollars.

It's unclear whether or not the Postal Service has the authority to end Saturday delivery of letters. Previously, the service has said it needs Congress to change current law to do so.

The USPS has borrowed billions of dollars from taxpayer money to cover shortfalls from a 2006 congressional mandate requiring the service to pre-fund healthcare benefits for future retirees.

Technological advances have also taken a bite at first-class mail. In the past year, the service has cut hours at thousands of post offices -- some are open for only two hours a day.
